When people make lists of “words you shouldn’t use because they are offensive slurs” but then the words they recommend you use in their place mean.. the exact same thing.
A word just a word. What hurts people or makes them upset is:
- having a sensitive personal issue dragged into the open and shoved into their face
- having an element of their identity or personality treated as an interchangeable synonym with “bad” or “wrong”
- having their race or some other element of their identity singled out as the only notable element about them while their individuality is completely discarded
So, you know.. changing the labels you put on people every few months/years doesn’t keep them from being upset or offended, and pretending like a person isn’t different from you or isn’t facing hardships in their life doesn’t make them feel better about it.
Treating people like human beings and being MINDFUL and CONSIDERATE of who they are and what they have to deal with is what you need to be doing.
For the people who try to focus on words and censor people based on “ableist slurs” that aren’t even ableist.
